David Burliuk

His Long Island and His World

by

Ellen de' Pazzi

  EDITOR'S NOTE

"This is not one of your coffee table art books,'' Ms. de' Pazzi will tell you. Where we have included art, as often from scans provided by the Burliuk family itself,  we are fully aware that its reproduction in black and white is more for the "flavor'' than for "archiving!'' More so, we have used many photos and items of memorabilia which are, themselves, second or third generation reproductions. As often they are reproduced from Burliuk's on publications of Color and Rhyme. These are rarely seen and help document the artist's world, his friends, his activities.

Similarly, we are fully aware this book is neither a memoir, nor an "academic'' treatment. Rather, the author, Ellen de' Pazzi, is a treasure to Long Island and more widely in the arts world. This book commingles her personal remembrances with an eclectic gathering of Burliukana. This book fulfills a promise Ms. de' Pazzi literally gave David Burliuk on his deathbed, that she would remember him in her own way, in her own words after he was gone. Hers is the unique perspective of someone who spent years in the constant company of the man and now can blend those personal views with factual material to flesh out the remarkable persona of David Burliuk.
