CHI, Creative Health Institue

Founded to help people to enhance their creativity and health, CHI merges Western traditions of writing with Eastern philosophy and alternative health modalities. "Chi" in Chinese means "energy" or a "life force," and is familiar to many people in the practice of Tai Chi or Chi Gong.

We work with a variety of  alternative medical and psychological professionals as well as in close association with Chi for Longevity, Inc. (see www.wudangtao.com) and the Association for Chinese American Enrichment, bringing programs to Long Island and across the country.

Perhaps you wish to learn more about poetry and writing as therapy. You may be a writer who is looking for a way to un-block  or increase your creative energy.

  • Probe your unconscious mind for new topics.
  • Give voice to your joys or pain.
  • Improve your health and mental powers.

Our workshops can come to you or you may wish to study privately. Also see link to the Healing Power of Writing

SAMPLE OF OUR PROGRAMS:

Working in concert with its many talented individual teachers and sister organizations, CHI proposes to sponsor a series of special events and to establish a cycle of on-going programs.

Special events will include:

  • Tai Chi Day, our seventh annual free presentation in association with Chi for Longevity under the direction of Tseng Yun Xiang.
  • Chi Gong by the Sea, capitalizing on the extensive beauty of Long Island’s shores, free lecture and group demonstrations in parks across the area.
  • The Healing Power of Writing, a third bi-annual conference in association with Writers Unlimited Agency, to demonstrate the benefits of creative writing in over-coming trauma, ill-health and loss through poetry and writing.
  • Eastern Philosophy, Western Psychology, in association with Stony Brook University, utilizing the skills of author-psychologists Drs. Schenck and Levine, to encourage the integration of alternative counseling techniques.
  • Chinese-American Festival, a second major event together with the Association for Chinese-American Enrichment. Day-long presentations of Chinese culture, music, crafts, foods.

Access to at least part of each of these events will be free and open to the public in the belief that everyone can benefit from information and skills presented. Free events also promote the organization and center and its other continuing programs.

Classes will include:

  • Creative Writing, poetry, story children and adults
  • Tai Chi and Chi Gong
  • Food "Medicine" for Herbal Health
  • Mediation for Greater Creativity
  • Autobiography Writing for seniors
  • Lectures on a series of current topics

Our Board of Directors and cooperating associations provide a rich talent-pool for instruction. Teachers will receive standard adult-education instructional compensation (in the belief that no one should be asked to work "for nothing" though many of our board members have offered to donate their fees back to the center).
